Naval Outdoor Centre Germany is made up of approx 12 permanent RN, RM and civilian instructors.

Major Paul Gellender MBE OC NOCG
Maj Paul Gellender MBE joined the Royal Marines in Apr 1982 and the RM PT Branch in 1986. Initially specializing as a Remedial Instructor, commissioned in 2004 he has since continued to pursue adventurous and challenging activities qualifying across the whole spectrum of AT and activities delivered by the centre.
As Officer Commanding he is accompanied by his wife Julie, a keen marathon runner, 2 children Thomas (12) and Holly (8) who both attend a local German School. |

WO2 Paul Farr RM NOCG Chief Instructor
WO2 Paul Farr joined the ROYAL MARINES in 1986, on completion of training he joined 3 Cdo Bde. In 1991 he passed his PTI's Qualifiers cse and joined the PT TP at CTCRM, during this period he took a Recruit TP through training and also gained numerous Adventure Training Qualifications.
After a period as an Instructor at the ROYAL NAVY's Resource and Initiative Training Centre in South Wales he went on to complete his Senior Command Cse and PTI 1's cse in 1996. This was followed with a draft to the JOINT SERVICE MOUNTAIN TRAINING CENTRE Ballachulish where he achieved his Mountain Instructor Certificate. Thereafter he joined the ALPINE TRAINING CENTRE in Bavaria Southern Germany.
In 2004 he returned to 3 Cdo Bde as a Colour Sergeant deploying to various theatres and also assisting in the running of EX BAVRIAN FEST. On selection for promotion he returned to CTCRM for a short period as the Unit PTI and then PT Sergeant Major. In 2007 he joined FLEET PROTECTION GROUP ROYAL MARINES as a Squadron Sergeant Major. 2009 saw the opening of the NAVAL OUTDOOR CENTRE GERMANY where he took on the role of Chief Instructor.
Married to Alison with three sons he is a lifelong kayaker and canoeist having represented GREAT BRITAIN at World Cup and World Championship level in Wild Water Racing. He is also a very keen mountaineer, skier and mountain biker. |

Sgt Steve Burgon
Sgt Steve Burgon joined the Royal Marines in January 1982 and enjoyed a variety of drafts before deciding on a career as a PTI.
As a PTI, I excelled in a variety of sporting activities, before becoming a GB age group champion in both Nordic skiing and triathlon.
By 2000 I changed emphasis and started working on my AT qualifications
I now hold Summer and winter Mountaineering leader, summer and winter climbing Instructor, alpine, Nordic and touring instructor, as well as kayaking / canoeing instructor awards.
My future aspirations are to work towards the Joint Services Mountain Guide scheme and BASI Nordic tutor.

David Beuzeval
I was found abandoned in a kayak wearing ski boots in august 1977. Since this historical day I have devoted my life to both skiing and kayaking. However, along the way I also tried my hand at climbing, mountainbiking, open boating, conquering various mountains and generally living the dream. It's a hard life. |

POPT Jamie Buttle
POPT Jamie Buttle joined the Royal Navy in 1997 as a Marine Engineer Mechanic after serving on HMS Fearless up until 2002, he then chose to transfer to the Physical Training Branch and qualified as a PTI in 2003. Having passed the inaugural Royal Navy Adventurous training course, he now finds himself working at the Naval Outdoor Centre in Germany. A gifted sportsman he has represented the Royal Navy as a Biathlete, Cross Country Skiing, Cross Country Running and Athletics. He lives and works in Germany with his wife and twin boys.

Cpl Steve Fry
Cpl Steve Fry is our Admin NCO who is a clerk by trade and has spent 23 years in the RM, 18 years of which as a clerk. He is predonminetly office based and his roles include bookings, accounts and general NOCG admin, he has been allowed out on occasions to experience the wonders of AT.
He is married to Valerie and has a 6 years old called Daniel who are both enjoying their time in Bavaria. Steve enjoys cycling to work daily. |

POPT Richy Gray
Born in Edinburgh in 1971 and joined the Royal Navy in 1991 as a Radio Operator.
He transferred to the PT branch in 1995 and has served on the most ships of the staff.
Gray has been lucky enough to serve in Gibraltar and now he is really enjoying his draft in NOCG.
He is very happy to be in a job where he teaches positive minded people his passion of Adventurous training
When off watch Richy likes to read naval history and spend time with his wife and two daughters. |

POPT Zoe Hennessey
POPT Hennessey joined the Royal Navy in 1991 as a Wren Writer. She transferred to the PT Branch in 1996 and has served at many Establishments/Ships home and abroad.
In 2008 she completed the Adventure Training Instructors Course at JSAT Llanrwst, N. Wales where she went onto work at Adventure Training Centre (East) – Portsmouth and finally the Naval Outdoor Centre (Germany).

Jonathan May
Born Catterick 1976.
Joined the Army (REME) in 1993, trained as an Armourer. Didn't really warm to that so took up A.T.
Attained my first ski instructor qualification in 1998 and have kept upgrading them ever since.
Hoping to finish off my Basi level 4 ISTD this year, just the speed test to go!!!
Since I left the Army in 2006 I've been improving my A.T quals across the board. For me the love is winter skiing and summer kayaking.
The other activities are awesome but you can only have a few favourites.
I live out here in Germany full time with my girlfriend Vicki who also has the same job but chooses to work freelance as she enjoys the freedom of work choice |

LPT Jamie Murphy
LPT Jamie Murphy joined the Naval Outdoor Centre in February 2009, he is 29 and currently lives with his wife Philippa and daughter Ella mai who keeps him very active.
LPT Murphy has been part of the Royal Navy since 1999 were he joined as a Marine Engineer Mechanic, in 2003 he transferred to the PT Branch in 2003 and deployed on a few ships before joining the OLTC Talybont. He aspires to be a RN Adventure Training Instructor which has seen him based at the NOC(G).
Murphy enjoys AT activities but has a soft spot for Climbing, Skiing and Kayaking. |

POPT Tony Newcombe
POPT Tony Newcombe joined the Royal Navy in 1991 and although the engineering branch did not want him to leave he joined the PT Branch in 1997. Having spent many a year coaching and playing Football, Rugby and Boxing, a new challenge was needed. After completing the RAF ATI Course succesfully, he is now a qualified Rock Climb leader, SPA, Scottish Trail Cyle leader, Mountain Leader, L3 Open Canoe Instructor, L2 Kayak Instructor.

Sgt Ash Sleight
Sgt Ash Sleight joined the Corps in 2000 and joined the RM PT Branch in 2006 where he specialized in Adventure Training, running AT packages for RM Recruits at Penhale in Cornwall.
After successfully completing his PT1's Course in Feb 09 he joined NOCG accompanied by his wife Lucy and 2 Sons Alfie and Benjamin. CPL Sleight is currently a Joint Service Rock Leader, Scottish Mountain Bike Leader Trained and 3* Kayaker/Level 1 instructor.

POPT Johnathan (Wilkie) Wilkins
POPT Wilkins joined the Navy in Nov 1998 as a Marine Engineer Mechanic, after 5 years as an engineer and serving on HMS Kent and Ironduke he chose to Branch change to the Physical Training Specialisation in March 2004. After completing Physical Training Qualifying Course he was drafted to Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton at the Adventurous Training PT Instructor. After a short draft POPT Wilkins then joined HMS Chatham as the ships Physical Trainer in Feb 2006 for 2 year, after tours of the Falklands and the Mediterranean he then moved to the Naval Outdoor Centre in Jan 2008 where he is still currently serving. Wilkie enjoys all aspects of Adventurous Training but especially enjoys Kayaking and Skiing. His other hobbies include spending time with friends and family and Liverpool Football Club. |
