History The Naval Outdoor Centre Germany started in 2004 with Exercise Bavarian Fest a multi activity summer Adventurous exercise designed to expose large numbers from 3 Commando Brigade to AT during the Brigade's conversion to BOWMAN and VIKING in 2005. Bavaria was chosen because of the fantastic range of activities on offer, something the Army has recognised and capitalized upon for the last 20 years, and partly because there was a RN/RM presence within the area, working from the Alpine Training Centre. The first EX BAVARIAN FEST involved some 460 participants and ran for 9 weeks. Due to its success it was decided to expand the concept and run a RN exercise for 4 weeks in Oct of 2005 which once again proved highly successful and demonstrated to many within the Naval Service the obvious benefits AT has to offer in terms of risk exposure, challenge and enjoyment. 2006 and 7 saw an expansion of this concept but with the Exercise renamed to BAVARIAN SURPRISE and with over 2200 participants enjoying the whole experience. This in turn has lead to the further development and expansion of the exercise so that in 2008 it included a full winter package and ran for over 8 months continuously providing the justification that a full time single service Naval AT centre was not only viable but could greatly enhance individual development and significantly play a major contributing part in enhancing the Moral Component of Operational Capacity. So in Feb 2009 the Naval Service first AT Centre, the Naval Outdoor Centre Germany formed up and was officially opened by The Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Alan Massey ADC CBE on the 3 Apr 2009. We have kept the Bavarian Surprise link because so many people across the Naval Service have already visited us and told their oppos. We are now in a period of consolidation but are already looking to the future to remain at the cutting edge of AT delivery for the RN/RM. Because of the success of the trials we've run invovling AT proficiency courses we've decided o expand this concept further for 2011 and offer a comprehensive programme of AT proficiency courses throughout the year. See 2011 forecast. This year we ran a summer Battle Back initiative (FORTITUDE) for injured personnel which proved very positive and therefor looking to expand this concept in 2011.
