November 2010

Team Gellender won the Alpine Summer Challenge 2010 competition. The aim was to visit as many bodies of water between June and Sept within the 5 Alpine countries. Dave Bouzeval won in 2009 so the title stays with NOCG for another season. Many congratulations to Maj Gellender, his wife Julie and 2 children Thomas and Holly. They were announced the winners at a social held by the NOCG.

NOCG also took 2nd place - well done Selina Newcombe, and 3rd place - The Gray Family.

The challenge was initially started by the Army Training Centre and in 2009 they invited NOCG to join. The aim is to get instructors and families out exploring the local area and all it has to offer.

Bouldering Wall Officially Opened

The NOCG bouldering wall was offificially opened by Holly Gellender. NOCG staff, family and friends were invited to a BBQ on 10 April at Haus Schwaben to try the wall and test their climbing skills. The BBQ was a great success, with thanks to Sgt Ash Sleight for organising.

NOCG would also like to thank the Sports Amenities and Benevolence Scheme for the financial support that enabled us to purchase this fantastic recreational and training facility.

New Bouldering Wall at NOCG

NOCG has just taken delivery of a purpose built bouldering wall, this is a first of its kind and was developed in close conjunction with Scott Muir of Extreme Dream.

Already immensely popular with participants and staff alike the bouldering challenges provide most users with their first introduction to this high adrenaline activity whilst enhancing climbing skills, improving core strength and fitness and providing an immense amount of fun.  NOCG would like to thank the Sports Amenities and Benevolence Scheme for the financial support that enabled us to purchase this fantastic recreational and training facility.

NOCG Instructor, Dave Bouzeval, Wins Alpine Challenge 2009

In June 09 the Army Training Centre Medical Officer, Mr Henry Brannigan MBE, with agreement from the Commandant Maj Ken Sparkes QRH threw down the gauntlet to the NOCG Staff in the form of a journey between the 2 centres.  The winning individual or team was to undertake a journey involving as many means of travel, under his or her's own steam as possible, from one centre to the next.  Points would be awarded for different forms of travel but only utilising person power, recognised AT activities and the route selection that included peaks over 2000ms.  Contestants had 2 months to conduct their journeys with the caveat that the route must be started were it previously finished.  The main aim was to encourage all within both organisations to get out into the mountains and explore whilst embarking on some imaginative and challenging routes.

There were many entries but only 4 teams completed the challenge, 2 from NOCG and 2 from ATC, with the 1st and 2nd positions secured by NOCG entrance.  Dave Bouzeval one of our intrepid civilian AT instructors squeezed over the finish line ahead of team Gellender (who as a family entered and worked hard on their team unity throughout) with the Maj Ken Sparkes and Henry Branningan coming a distant 3rd and 4th.

So the buck passes to the NOCG and in particularly Dave to come up with an imaginative challenge for next year, the hope is to try and be more inclusive and to encourage all age groups from both centres to take part, a challenge in itself.

NOCG Staff and families would like to thank Henry and the Commandant for their efforts and the social on completion.
